HELP: DV Camera or Bridge is not listed as a video source in the V1 Software, but works in other applications.

My DV Camera (or Bridge) is connected via the FireWire (IEEE 1394) port on my computer, but does not appear in the list of video capture devices in the V1 Software. However, the DV device can be used as a video capture source in other programs such as ULead Video Studio, Sony Movie Shaker, MGI VideoWave, etc...

Why isn't my capture device recognized by the V1 Software?

The following information applies only to Windows 98se, ME and 2000 systems.

DV devices such a Digital Camcorder or DV Bridge operate just like any other hardware device attached to your computer, and require a driver to operate properly. Your DV device may be using an incompatible non-Microsoft driver that was installed by another program. For compatibility reasons, the V1 software is designed to utilize the standard Microsoft DV driver provided with your operating system and may not work properly with non-Microsoft drivers.

To verify that Windows is detecting the DV Camera, open the Windows 'Device Manager'. To view the 'Device Manager', perform the following steps:

  • If the V1 Professional Software is currently running, exit the software.
  • Click the 'Start' button, point to 'Settings' and open the 'Control Panel'.
  • In the Control Panel window, double-click the 'System' control panel.
  • In Windows 98 or ME:
    Click the 'Device Manager' tab.
    In Windows 2000 or XP:
Click the 'Hardware' tab, then the 'Device Manager' button.

If the camera has been detected and initialized by Windows, it should appear in the Imaging Devices category as a Microsoft DV Camera and VCR'. Certain DV Cameras may also appear as a brand name, such as Panasonic DV Camera. If that device category does not exist, or the camera is not listed in that category, it is not being properly detected by Windows.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot your DV Camera connection:

  • Power down the DV Camera by switching it to the 'Off' state.
  • Disconnect the FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable from both the computer and the DV Camera.
  • Carefully, but firmly reconnect the FireWire cable to the computer and the DV Camera.
  • Power on the DV Camera by switching it to the 'Camera' position.

At this point, the hardware listing in 'Device Manager' should refresh and list the camera under the Imaging Devices category.

If your DV device is not using the standard Microsoft driver, it may be listed in another device category such as: (To list the devices in a category, click the [+] next to it.)
Sound, Video and Game Controllers
61883 Device Class
AVC Device Class
Other Devices
Unknown Devices

NOTE: The 'Other' and 'Unknown' categories are where Windows will place hardware that it cannot install correctly, or is not working properly. A device appearing here may not necessarily be your DV device, it may be another device that was not properly installed. Verify that the unknown device is your DV device by turning your camera on and off and watching for activity in the Device Manager. If the camera does not appear anywhere in the Device Manager, and no activity is noted when the DV device is switched on and off, please double check your connections and verify that they are tight. If the device still fails to appear in the list, it is not being recognized by the computer and there may be another problem somewhere in your camera, cabling, connections, or your FireWire (IEEE 1394) card.

Texas Instruments DV Driver
If the camera appears as a 1394 DV Camcorder, you have the Texas Instruments DV Driver installed instead of the Microsoft DV Driver. This driver is know to have various compatibility issues. Please download the one of the following 'TI Driver Fix Instructions' to assist you in restoring your Microsoft DV Drivers. The instructions differ slightly depending on the operating system you use, so please download the version specific to your system.

TI Driver Fix Instructions - Windows ME

Sony DV Driver
The following applies ONLY to Windows 98se and ME systems preloaded with 'Sony Movie Shaker' software. Windows XP systems may display "Sony DV camera" in the Device Manger even when using the required Microsoft DV camera driver. The Sony Switcher program will not work on Windows XP systems.

If your DV device appears in the V1 Software DirectShow hardware list (not the Windows Device Manager) as a Sony DV Camera, you can use the Sony DV Driver Switcher Program (right-click the link and select 'Save Target As' to download) to restore the Microsoft DV Drivers.
