Fatal Exception 0E:0028 when starting V1 Professional software (Win98/ME only)

When I start my V1 Professional Software, it crashes with a Windows Fatal Exception error:
Fatal Exception 0E has occurred

V1 Professional includes support for the Focaltron Golf Achiever hardware. At startup, the Achiever software searches the available COM (serial communication) ports of the system in an attempt to locate the Achiever's laser hitting mat.

If the Achiever software encounters a "Virtual" COM port, such as what is used for many Winmodems or for the MS HotSync application, you may encounter this Fatal Exception error. The error only occurs while the virtual COM port is in use, such as when connected to the Internet via Winmodem, or while the HotSync application is active. This problem has only been reported by Windows 98 and Windows Millenium users.

To work around this problem, Interactive Frontiers advises you to close the HotSync application before starting V1.
If you are receiving this error due to the use of a Winmodem, you may need to remove the Achiever's software component from your system in order to operate V1 while connected to the Internet.

To remove the Achiever component, please follow these steps. Please note that removing this component will disable support for the Achiever within the V1 software.

1- Exit all running applications to return to the Windows Desktop.
2- Click the Windows START button and select the FIND (or search) option.
3- Search for the file "GF_TOOLS.DLL" in the C:WINDOWS folder. It is normally located in the C:WINDOWSSYSTEM folder.
4- When the file is located, either DELETE this file from the system, or CUT it and PASTE it to a different folder on your hard drive. The latter option should only be used if you plan to use an Achiever in the future. (You must return the file to it's original location to re-enable Achiever support)
5- Once the file has been deleted or moved, start V1. It should no longer generate the Fatal Exception error.
